Born in 1960 in New Delhi, Seema Kohli is a distinguished contemporary Indian artist whose practice centres on celebrating feminine beauty, sensuality, and spirituality. Her work explores themes of creation and cosmic energy through the concept of Hiranyagarbha (the Golden Womb), expressed in richly detailed forms, layered colours, and symbolic female imagery, often drawing from ancient texts such as the Yajur Veda. She is best known for her Hiranyagarbha (Golden Womb) series, large-scale public murals at Delhi International Airport and Mumbai Airport, and her award-winning video work Swayamsiddha - Myth, Mind and Movement, as well as works inspired by the powerful feminine force of Mahishasur Mardini. Kohli's art presents the feminine as both nurturer and protector, uniting beauty, resilience, and spiritual strength through luminous colour and meditative rhythm. She is a recipient of the Lalit Kala Akademi Award and the Gold Award at the Florence Biennale, and her works have been showcased in major international exhibitions, biennales, and public spaces. The artist lives and works in New Delhi, where her studio practice continues to engage deeply with ideas of cyclical creation and transformative feminine energy. The artist currently lives and works in New Delhi.
