Laishram Membi Devi
Laishram Membi Devi is Manipuri artist whose practice explores memory, identity, and emotional resilience through figurative and textile-informed visual languages. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, graduating with a Gold Medal in 2011, and later received her Master of Fine Arts from the College of Art, New Delhi in 2013.
Drawing from her upbringing in Manipur and her experiences of cultural negotiation, Laishram works engage with themes of belonging, intimacy, and the layered histories embedded within everyday life. While she works across multiple media, textiles often function as a key visual and conceptual element in her practice. The recurring motif of running stitches symbolises healing, endurance, and the quiet process of emotional repair, while also referencing the textile traditions that connect different cultural lineages within her family.
Her works have been exhibited in several exhibitions and cultural platforms across India and are held in private collections. Currently based in New Delhi, she continues to work as an independent artist, developing a practice that bridges personal narratives with broader socio-cultural histories, while foregrounding the lived experiences and cultural voices of Northeast India
