Bhuri Bai

Bhuri Bai (b.1968) was born in Pitol, a village on the border of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. She belongs to the Bhil
tribe of Central India. She was the first to paint on paper, and she brought the rich and vibrant world of Bhil art, its
specific style of painting nature and motifs with dots to paper, and into gallery spaces around the world.

Unrestricted to traditional motifs, she paints the world around her, mapping changes in technology, society, and bringing her own unusual experience into her repertoire.

In honour of her pioneering work, Bhuri Bai received the Shikar Samman from the Madhya Pradesh government in 1986 and a Padma Shri in 2021.
